super sunday
It’s called periwinkle, the color of these letters. I feel periwinkle now, after drinking white wine with my bff. After mourning her Steelers’ loss to the cheese heads and laughing at glee and singing ‘she’s not there’ at the top of our old lungs in front of her husband and teenage son. Great Zombies song, btw.
So home now with my small family, minus one sweet daughter. Home in the kitchen with the heater kickin on and the freezer making more cubes. Home with energy to spare after a sleepless night of on beck and call, and a full day of on the job firefighting. You know I’m not a firefighter, right? Nurses put out fires just as articulately as hose hounds, with one exception…our fires may smolder for weeks until snuffed out, maybe months…
Only saw one quarter of the super game, the last one. Caught glimpses as I hurried past the tv in the common area at work, on my way to typing notes, taking blood pressures, and refilling my coffee mug. A day in the life. I love my coworkers. I do. Their compassion pours from their skin like the summer sweat of a sunbather wearing a baby oil coat. I am blessed and honored to work alongside humans who believe what I do, see what I do, know what we are here to do, want to learn more of what we can do. Maybe you’ve met these incredible souls along your journey. I hope so. My life at work is fuller than I expected; I’ve jumped the 6 month hurdle at my third nursing job and I feel settled. One goal reached. Several works in process.

...she said infinity's a great place to start. (thanks u2)
time is irrelevant
goes round and round
first I see my friend, my house, my sister
family gathers, friend's and foe's
one woman wears black and covers her face
I feel a charge of power
invincibility to infinity
no line, nothing to cross
possibility of havoc and chaos hangs
within our foggy movements
and time
irrelevant
next I see who I want to see
through the fog and down the hallway
walks toward me holding a child's hand
his child's hand
welcome, come join us
don't fear the impossibility, it's a dream
we are one big happy family
in my home
which looks like a stranger's
bigger, better, cleaner
infinity's a good place to start
cleaning
entertaining friends and their children
where are you going with your face covered in black?
the parking lot is cold
I see the breezes blowing your skirt around you
are we going to be friends?
civil and smiling
sharing families
pretending this isn't a dream, because I wish it wasn't
possibility is non existent when the purpose lies dormant
go back in the house
drink wine behind closed doors
tonight we celebrate
sister's birthday
friends of her own
bring us back some fancy drinks please
be careful
but not careful like careful in a non-dream sequence
live
love
break rules
behave to infinity
make people think out loud and sing your song
I'll be playing hide-n-seek
behind slammed doors
that was quick!
get in here so we can party
we've started without you
laughing together for hours and hours
irrelevant time
every impossible moment
secrets told and heard
without shadows
morning approaching and encroaching
this is a dream
where dreams come true
and true is questionable
and feels like home
please don't wake up
I like this sequence
my # 9 dream
weaver of promise and prose
ready, set, start

...30 day challenge, day 16: song that makes you cry (or nearly)
~Jackson Browne, "Never Stop", acoustic version...listen here...lyrics here
~Grateful Dead, "Box of Rain"...listen here....lyrics here
~U2, "In a Little While" (listen here)
In a little while
Surely you'll be mine
In a little while... I'll be there
In a little while
This hurt will hurt no more
I'll be home, love
When the night takes a deep breath
And the daylight has no air
If I crawl, if I come crawling home
Will you be there?
In a little while
I won't be blown by every breeze
Friday night running to Sunday on my knees
That girl, that girl she's mine
Well I've known her since,
Since she was
A little girl with Spanish eyes
When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by
Oh my, my how you've grown
Well it's been, it's been... a little while
ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Slow down my beating heart
A man dreams one day to fly
A man takes a rocket ship into the skies
He lives on a star that's dying in the night
And follows in the trail, the scatter of light
Turn it on, turn it on, you turn me on
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love
Slow down my beating heart
Slowly, slowly love

under the influence
I just swallowed a tablespoon of cherrytussin...with codeine. Mind you, the prescribed dose is one teaspoon, but that didn't touch me last night. So we play the waiting game until my throat decides to be relaxed and not gasp for air by the incessant tickle.
Ok, I just felt the tickle, twice. This drug isn't playing nice. There's a dry cough, loud, non productive, and uncomfortable. Ugh! This is going to be a looong night. Sleeping on the couch, sitting straight up, 45 degrees up. Sucking on throat drops and trying to avoid sleeping and sucking and choking. Didn't mom always say not to fall asleep with food in my mouth? Or was that no smoking in bed? I would like to announce that coughing while sleeping is not allowed either.
Going to work in 7 hours...on no sleep most likely. So how to spend my awakening is all I need to figure now. Reading "She's Come Undone" for the second time. Interesting novel about an obese young woman who experiences lots of death, sex, eating, drugs, looking for something. Sounds familiar, hmmm. I'm at the part where the whale awakens her... will she lose weight and feel positive about herself? Will she accept that her mother wasn't an angel, even though she's dead. How will seven years in and out of a sanatorium settle this woman's indigestion? Does she ever succeed at suicide, or anything? The most incredible part of this book is the gender of it's author...a guy wrote this and you'd never know it. Not a clue. After all, men can write, can't they? discuss amongst yourselves...
A friend of mine blogs too. He, yes a man writer, is new to the public blog scene. Kudos for your bravery man. Deep thoughts aren't easiest sorted out in front of everyone in the world and their brother! I'm a chicken. Bok Bok! Uh oh, I just updated fb to say I'm blogging. Maybe people will think I'm practicing a European sport or something...flogging? That's painful, isn't it? I'm thinking of stoning, like in the Bible at Mary Magdalene, the whore. Or the daily ritual of my former self from 1982-1989...stoning the days and nights away, listening to the Dead and Yes and trippy Genesis. Thank God for music.
I ordered tons of albums from the Columbia Music Club and everyone wanted to tape my selections. Trying to refill my stash now with cd's and itunes has proven a bit costly. Inflation and all, 30 years later. I spent hours with my albums and their covers and the liner notes and lyrics. The first obsession was the Elton John greatest hits that my babysitter listened to on our child-size record player while hand writing all the lyrics for me. I lay on the floor next to her as she reset the needle to stay in line with her pen. I kept those lined papers filled with Bernie Taupin's ideas until I knew each song and its meaning for me. I think I was 8 or 9 years old.
My dad actually gave me my first two albums. The aforementioned EJ and the Beatles...can't remember which title. I see the four faces, short hair, smiling. I hear the choppy, upbeat songs about dancing and loving and girls and boys. You know, the important stuff.
pause for more dry hacking, cursing of codeine, water refill, slippers and sweatshirt...and fb updating.
...a bit light headed now, must be my high tolerance lowering.
Cool observations and thoughts had on my break:
My Morning Jacket has a diverse style of sound. I hear traces of country, Prince, folk, and of course r & r. I love their lyrics about sexy librarians and peanut butter pudding, and screaming for human touch, twice. "Touch me or I'm going to scream!!" How they read my mind like that, I'll probably never know...
(Come on it's a big, big world now...you gotta' like what you see!) I do!
I see my hot water turning a pleasant shade of raspberry. Passion is my tea's flavor name, labeled as such on what I would call an "ad bag." Clearly spaced phrases, describing the infusion d'herbes, sans caffeine, 1 sachet (French for those of you who took german or spanish in hs). Sounds like I'm steeping a bag of pot pourri. Wait I am! the ingredients include hibiscus, lemongrass, and rose hips. Hot and smooth on my throat...works for me.
Switched to U2, on shuffle.
starting to feel my arms relaxing, my eyelids too. 2 and 1/2 hours to relax my limbs and the tickle lies patiently, waiting to attack. At least I'm not interrupting the rest of my family's sleep with my breathing battle.

no line on the horizon (thanks U2)
Is it possible for an entire album of songs to relate to one person at one time in their life? Or am I just imagining or wishing or expecting? I agree with Stevie Wonder that songs are the key of life. The poetry of motion of the soul and the heart. The answers and questions of the particular moment you are listening. Make them fit into your world and they feel better, the words feel like you and you feel better.
Whatever needs are needed can be comforted. Build yourself a wall and good music knocks part of it down for you. Sing the music yourself and you fly into the next life. Anything is possible with emotion of want and fear and creativity. Vulnerability. Susceptibility. All can work for you if you let in your sound.
she's a rainbow and she loves the peaceful life...
it's not a hill it's a mountain as you start out your climb...
the sweetest melody is the one we haven't heard...
shout into the darkness, squeeze out sparks of light...
BEAUTY
And I share my songs through writing here...and there. Talking doesn't cut it for me. The right combination of thought falls from fingertips to keyboard easier than from mind to mouth. Why is that? Why has this always worked for me, since childhood? Am I hiding something from those who don't read me? Am I perfecting a strength or developing a secret language? My language. The real me. I'm just beginning this discovery, thus the forward momentum and the two deer turning the corner in the tall snowdrift. Everything seems new today and tomorrow again. Words spoken cannot describe. Words spoken may not be interpreted correctly...see, secret language. Words spoken are not always heard. I'll stick with writing.
I write for me and a few others and this www. It makes no sense to me but it feels like common sense. And the people who appreciate my writing make sense to me. Am I distancing myself from the non readers? Am I looking at my world with new glasses on? A fresh perspective is granted and I flap my wings a bit more...actually I develop my second wing and no longer fly in circles. Amazing. Thankful.
But I must land soon and return to the non writing world of daily routine. A different part of me that craves to shout out and begs to make a sound, stays intact for 8 hours of responsibility. I am proud of my discipline and surprised by my control. Only 8 hours.
And only 8 more days...
