no matter how you slice it, a sandwich is as a sandwich does

this morning ...manure manicured finger sandwiches are being constructed as we speak in my kitchen.
can't hide and can't deodorize their stink.
gotta dig quickly and deeply into mommy-roots and pull up the strongest ones
and wrap those suckers around my head until the words of positivity and strength and self idealization emerge,
encrusted and slimy and damp and ugly
almost forgotten
almost buried treasure, unexplored.

family trees are the hardest to see through.
the forest may run for miles and be transparent as the lace worn on my wedding day
not THE tree
ghosts of unknown relatives line branches, adding weight
separated, thin saplings reach out for extra light and the girth widens
difficult to prune
impossibly unmanageable
connections and origins and budding confusion
dry and cracked, brittle by years of wind storms and lightening strikes, and fallen beneath the forest's canopy
farther away from belonging and hope,
remembrance and pride,
respect and delight;
or hang precariously and alone
awaiting the boy to visit and randomly choose his newest fishing implement.

Read below an earlier post, written years ago, when I opened my heart, opened my soul, and shit sandwiches were served on platters to the ones I loved.  I'm perfecting my recipe, just in case you want it...

can barely see through the tears
must write to feel
must write to sort and think and see through
reality tears
acceptance of what i declared
and what responses followed
will follow
more to come
sure thing
reality

admitting purpose has price
to pay
in real time
with real people
real feelings to hurt
real intentions make real consequences
rather throw this keyboard through that window
rather hide
i'm good at it
hiding from reality
and bites
incompatibility of self with you
fit into one and not the other
help and hurt together
wishing i learned this already
might be easier
might not
reality bites
hard

my so called lifeline

October 4, 2010

My doubt, self doubt, grows exponentially with my silence.  When I tell him that I don’t think I can satisfy him, what am I really saying? Am I asking him for help or asking him to bail?  He’s heard this over and over and it’s ingrained in his thoughts of me.  He says he needs me to tell him what I want. Now.  He needs me to tell him that I want him or that I don’t want him.  That I want to fight for this relationship or that I won’t fight for it.  He wants and needs to hear me include myself in the fixing of this partnership. Or he needs to hear the alternative.  He wants to stick.  God tells him to.

I am confused.  I am hurt.  I am sad. I want so many experiences and I don’t feel close to my partner.  Did we ever feel close?  When did we think the same and dream the same dreams?  When did we share our desires?

I know I am growing and exploring who I never got to be.  I have consistently been the work-on-it gal.  But maybe my work hasn’t been for the good of closeness.  Have I been working toward strengthening our togetherness or our separateness?  What are my goals now?  What do I have the capability of working on?  Toward?  What do I want to work on?

Testing my limits by going to school and listening to him doubt that I made the right choice without him.
Testing my mental health by submitting to illogical expectations of a psychotic boss and resigning before she canned me.
Testing my self confidence and if he is right about my nursing ability.
Getting blindsided by my own confidence.
Feeling like a fool at the mercy of strangers.
Falling into similar traps at a job without foundation.
Exhausting myself to please and push for more and to fit in.
Ignoring the signals of security as I watch the walls crumble around me.
Running away before the explosion begins, setting myself up for self implosion instead.

How did I get here?  Where did I come from?  Why do I think this way?  Where is God?

I have felt lost in the last year or two, crying because I was hurt when he didn’t think well of me.  I recall the times he told me that my way of thinking is wrong, that my way of expressing my thoughts is wrong and inefficient and is not worth his time.  So I shut up.  I stopped expressing myself to him.  I stopped trying to explain myself and where I was coming from and how I felt and what I wanted.  I gave up.  After all, I did not want to hear that the man I loved thought negatively about me.  I did not need him to reinforce my self doubt.  Why put myself in a position where I knew I would hurt?

Our conflicts became broken records of despair and futility.  One negative word or head shake or rolling of the eyes or fuck you,  and I’m gone.  Out the door.  Out of the house.  Out of the city.  Out of my mind. Out of reality.  Out of myself.  This is the truth.  I’ve been living outside of myself.

Depressed enough to give up my license.  Depressed enough to say I’ll work for minimum wage.  Embarrassed enough to tell him he was right about me being a nurse.  Frightened enough to lie to myself and hide from the truth.  Until the sunshine blinded my insecurities for a brief moment of clarity and WTF-ness.

I didn’t want to be Rainey anymore.  Rainey is not taken seriously.  Rainey is a baby and frail and frustrated and fragile.  Rainey doesn’t know how to stand up for herself and speak her thoughts and commit to decisions or make and pursue goals.  I want to grow up and be L.  I want to make my own decisions and speak my mind and joke in public and cheer loudly at the games and talk about passionate subjects and tell my family what I really mean and not take their shit anymore.  That includes him.  No more shit sandwiches.  No more crybaby.  No more sulking in the corner.  No more caring what they think.

And I landed softly.  I landed safely.  I carefully caress my nursing career in the home of mental health.  And I feel confidence anew.  I am a nurse.  I am helping and learning and teaching and growing.  And God is with me.  The dance of life continues in the next room.  Please join us.  Please take off your shoes and get comfortable for this ride.  We welcome you back.  We missed you. Now get to work.

What I believe is truth in this room are lies inside the other room.  How I perform here is different than what I perform there. The train tracks switch in between and my mind does not always follow.  Which way do I turn?  Which way do you want me to turn?

I’m taking my meds.  I’m writing and sorting and releasing stress my way.  My way may be the wrong way.  Wrong for this family.  Wrong for these kids.  Wrong for my parents and his.

He tells me the way I should do this.  Live.  Relate.  Speak my mind.  Listen.  Form goals and work toward them.  Parent.  Partner.
He suggests and helps when he notices my confusion and frustration.  He advises me to do what he does, because it works for him, has worked since he was a kid, 12 or 13 or 14 years old.  Good for him to be confident in his habits and confident in his patterns and with his goals reached and processes of getting there.  Good for him to rely on consistency.  Good for him to keep him afloat through the dark ages.

When I was 12, 13, 14, I was watching my parents split up for some unknown reason and placing me in the arms of a stranger without skills to know how to relate with him.  Placing me in a different world, switching scenes without telling me I had to follow.  Changing the expectations and allowances of my pre-adolescent hormonally developing mind and soul and heart.

Choices stripped.  Opinions banned.  Extraction from comfortable and forward momentum.  Forced into unknown and unsupported.  Doubted and divided.  Slapped and insulted.  Stifled and censored.  Ignored and injured.  Where am I going?  Where are you taking me?  What am I supposed to do now?  Who is leading me?  Where am I?

And I ran.  Toward acceptance of the negative sort.  From strangers who barely knew me and who I didn’t have to reveal myself. I didn’t have to hold back my passion.  And I flew.  Into trouble and insecurity of the adolescent kind.  The trouble of who do I like and how do I deal and what if I’m rejected?  Trouble of trying to ignore my home life long enough to feel like I could be happy otherwise.  Pretend to like yourself or don’t and pretend others do.  Release and reject.  Revive sanity temporarily.  Act two roles.  Isn’t that what I was taught?  Be someone you’re not in order to survive?  Be what they want you to be in order to be accepted?  In order not to get hit or hurt or doubt yourself more?
Don’t ask questions. Don’t lead with ideas.

August 8, 2011  (10 months later)

Full circle.  Right back where I started.  I’m at it again.  The last paragraph is my story.  The only one.  The missing link in my lifetime of sorrow.  No rusted links, only shiny like new, strong as ever sharp, cold metal connections, from my ten year old happy-go-lucky fourth grader to my presently fucked up self.  Breaking hearts and taking names by accident.  The accidental tourist of my own life.  45 years take away ten real good ones and 35 links later, I’m the expert avoider.  Just call me super sucka!

Therapist on board.  Not holding back from the fears thrown at me.  I’m taking strikes until my bat makes contact, until I feel the spark of energy, the mass of force pushing me through the motion by the release of weight off my shoulders.  When I watch the homerun ball soar above us all, it’s arch predetermined by my positioning, and see the open sky smiling, I will know. I will know.

And since I have no idea how that Babe Ruth-esque moment will feel, or when clarification will arrive, I’m grounded in my garden dugout, watching weeds pop up out of nowhere and wishing a giant hand will reach down to pull me up too.

I am the face of vulnerability

Outside, listening to U2 and the competing birdsong.  Winds colder than an hour ago.  No one home but g-dog and the neighbor next door.  Even an entire day of alone has rendered me speechless here.  My paralyzing fear of writing too little to feel relief or too much to scare, has ratcheted up my anxiety.   Yes, I am the face of anxiety.  And depression.  And unsure, unbalanced wife and mother.  This is where I tell the truth, here, in these words and commas and incorrect grammar.  Here in my head I wrestle with what should and what wants to spew.  Word vomit.  Shit sandwich.  Cursing.  Pitying.  Streaming my consciousness until unconsciousness takes lead.  I will burst open soon if I don’t confess.  And confessional in catholic church is not my destination.

I am not angry today.  I am unsure.  I am the face of avoidance.

So much, too much is happening in my chaotic normalcy.  I thank God for the angel I found called therapist.  Therapist knows me,  instant understanding the first meeting.  She asked to read my blog within the first hour…she’s the first to ask to be let in.  How can this be any easier?  It’s hard.  As I’ve said to my clients while psych nursing, “it may become worse before it gets better,” or something versed more professionally.  You get the picture.  I choose to dive into my past to figure out what in the hell I’ve been believing and if I believe it now.  My investigative cap is on and I’m smoking my pipe.  In order to give myself fully to my husband and daughter and son, I choose to give myself fully to me.  I have heard the objections to rummaging in the attic of childhood and parental influence.  I have listened to the ‘today is now’ crew.  I feel both of you.  I feel like living now.  I just don’t know how…yet.  Foreign to some.  Others in my blog community will understand.

The niche I’m making for myself as a psychiatric nurse is rewarding and fulfilling and vulnerable.  Vulnerabilities are shining in neon purple behind my eyelids.  My doubts are surfacing through the scum covered pond called denial.   With each client I serve, each story they tell me of abuse, neglect, depression, mania, hallucinations,  family issues, eating issues, med compliance, denial….I hear parts of my stories.  Inevitable.  Not all bad.   Not all hopeless.  I find parts of myself at work.  Lost parts hidden or parts unknown.  I am a medical professional.  People look up to me to lead.  People ask my opinion.  People welcome me into closets full of skeletons.  I am humbled, thankful, proud.  My supervisor and I discussed my performance yesterday and I was offered a raise.  I’m here.  I’m at a fork in the road, at the point on my lifeline labeled ‘career.’   Goal set and reached.  Dreamed and lived.  My idea nurtured into my career.  This is a milestone for me.  A first.  Something people around me doubted until recently.  Doubt, the reason I isolate.  The reason I waiver.  The reason I am anxious.

When I was a little girl I roamed our safe suburban neighborhood with other children.  I enjoyed my sleep-overs and lunches at neighbor’s and sharing our backyard pool.  I enjoyed family time with brother and sister and parents.  I learned to trust.  My mind holds those first ten years as primary colors and pleasant smells.  I remember conversations had with kids and teachers in elementary school.  I remember memorizing Shel Silverstein and cross-stitching patches for our centennial year quilt.  I remember the time my dad took me to school late because he and mom were arguing.  I remember standing in line to see the principal during lunch recess because I was caught throwing a snowball…I feel the nervousness as I stood in line, fearful of being in trouble, yet ballsy enough to walk out of line and back to class unseen.  I was a good girl.  I was a happy girl.  I wore two braids everyday, my mother’s doing.  I held a house key and unlocked the house after school in fourth grade for little bro.  The round kitchen table hosted family conversations of dad’s business and birthday cakes with marshmallows in the frosting.  I liked my childhood.  I belonged there.  I was happy.  I was me.

Depression found me soon after we moved into a different suburb.  Soon after our parents divorced.  Soon after we became dad and three kids.  Soon after I began questioning.  Soon after hormonal changes and scary new school and being teased for braids and crying at school.  Soon after I became best friends with the cool girl who I thought hated me.  Again a few years later when best friend moved out of state.  Again after stepmother number one and step sister number one moved in.  The colors faded and the aromas unrecognizable.  I don’t blame.  I remember.  I have to remember myself.  I’ve tried to forget and avoid and pretend I’m ok now.  That isn’t working well.  I confess.

I’m grown up and responsible now.  I have an obligation to know myself.  I want to know myself.  When my husband asks me what I want in my life, what I aspire to do, what I feel compelled to accomplish and succeed at and share with him and the kids…I cant answer.  I have not allowed myself to explore these answers.  I have not looked inside for answers.  I have used outside influences to right my wrongs and lead my decisions.  I have followed stronger personalities  toward destinations of their choice.  This must change now.  Thus I seek professional help, remind myself to pop that Zoloft pill each day, write to relieve the pressure, shoot photos to expand my sight line, and close my mouth more often so I may hear more life music.

Wilco and I have a strange relationship, speaking of music.  Their music moves me.  The old stuff, the new stuff, it’s all good.  Poetry in motion.  No matter when I listen to Wilco, no matter what decade the writing, I feel connection.  I’m not obsessed, just impressed.  And thankful for each experience to enjoy other human beings’ talent and creativity.  To know that these men write for and share their innermost thoughts with strangers is comforting for me.  The years they practiced playing their instruments, reading music, composing, fighting personal demons, living relationships, feeling tired after touring and recording and transitioning through personnel changes…and helping little ole me feel happy.  Thank God for creative, compassionate souls.

My turn to give, create, share, add value.   I am the face of creativity.  Peace.  ~L

2/2/11

it's 4 am, do you know where you are?

as I listen to the snow plows attack the drifting blizzard, I feel safe and peaceful.  lately, as you can tell from my blog posts, I have required calm and quiet at home.  This quiet is now.  I am writing for me and to you and again I feel like fingers follow meaning and sort thoughts into sentences.  My brain is on overload with what I have not written in the past 6 months.

I found my nursing niche and I'm honing my psychiatric craft.  This job fits me well, like the pair of brown corduroy pants I lovingly lived holes through the knees.  My back aches on this antiquated chair, and I am writing.  My words are stumbling through the portal, chopping onto the keys and into run ons and fragments.  And I'm writing and feeling it again.

clickity clackity
soft black plastic snapping
fingers ready and set in position
typewriter bell is missing, replaced by the hum of the pc's overworked fan
I'm writing.
In blue not ink.
In incorrect grammar and forgotten capitalization.

even as my lungs ache for deeper breaths
and my heavy head leans in the direction of my pillow,
even though my husband may call me crazy for staying up so late
and my dog may beg me to feed her early as I crawl up the stairs,
even if no one reads this post
and I sleep soundly anyway...
breathing in positivity one molecule at a time is good.
is forward momentum.
is what I am about today.
every day.
breathe in, breathe out
inhale, exhale
fill lungs and they will work for you
fill heart and it will beat for you
fill mind and it will think for you
fill life and you will live.

thank you friends and family who believe in the power...together we will fly higher on mended wings and run faster than the snow falls...together or individually, we have positive energy to turn us on, turn us into who we are, turn our hearts toward the sun and turn our inequities into acknowledgments...be...see...free...me.

by the light of the moon

[post script, pre-read: this occurred 10 years ago]

I had a private room. Except every hour when the stranger opened the door. The flashlight shone toward my sleeping frame, looking for signs of life. I refused the sleeping pill offered by the nurse with the rolling cart. I had perfected my art of sleeping. I used it and it protected me. No thank you nurse Ratched, please offer mine to the manic man.

The first few nights I journaled. Inside the loneliness I bedded. I grew accustomed to the wait and built my temporary routine. No sense complaining myself into a straight jacket. The doctor wouldn't see me until Monday morning. Why the fuck didn't you tell me this before I signed my name? I could've slept in my own bed over the weekend.

He visited me every day. After work. With the kids once. His mom took a greyhound from Chicago to support him and the children. She had the pleasure of seeing me in all my glory several times, why not peer through the locked cage as well? This animal is quarantined. Only the cuckoo birds are allowed to fly in her airspace. Enter at your own risk.

Passing time in a locked psych unit takes imagination and the last of the unburnt brain cells. I dug mine up from my mind's closet and prepared to make something out of nothing. Groups were mandatory, or so I thought. Maybe my efforts will encourage one of them to call in the doc early. Maybe they'll stop whispering about the temper tantrum I had that first night...after I learned that I had replaced my normally grey weekend at home with this blackened bracket of bullshit. You got yourself into this crazy mess, you get yourself out!

The hospital chaplain they requested for me was young. She spoke soothingly and read from the Bible. She left me her number and permission to call again. God and I spoke daily. Unfortunately, he had no pull on the psychiatrist's schedule either. More Jeopardy and circled seating was in my future.

People watching was my new favorite hobby that weekend. Especially when the cutter showed off her handiwork and the psychotic held private conversations with herself, out loud. I heard the letters ECT as they wheeled a woman away. She never spoke, before or after her shock treatments. I wondered how the electricity felt coursing through her brain. Did it hurt? Were they going to offer me a ride on the gurney?

The smokers were allowed to step into a locked courtyard off the milieu. Craziest of all, they chose to stand in the November wind. One sunny day I stepped into the natural air too, and heard their stories. The older gent wearing the greenbay packers coat hadn't slept for weeks. He couldn't. He wouldn't. He was inside the throes of his manic state. How could you go without sleeping? My favorite pastime and my safest time of the day...essential to my sanity and an obstacle to his. The other young dude was avoiding jail or drug rehab or both. Co-occurring was his label. Addiction to substance accompanied by depression of some sort. The lady with multiple razor scars lining her limbs was a frequent flier. She appeared happy to be back and played the role of cruise director. Any questions? Ask the regular. My favorite was the young lady with the box of crayons. She allowed me to share in the catharsis of coloring books and crayola scents, and I realized how easily simplicity fit into my fractured mind.

I ate their food and followed their rules. I wrote and prayed and shared in group. For three long days and nights I lived in someone else's dream. I abandoned my family. I chose to commit. I wanted help desperately and my resources were depleted. Therapy and a starter dose of prozac wasn't cutting it, there had to be another way out. My life depended on it. And so did theirs.

part of the story

(originally written to French class friend prior to the birth of this blog 10/2009)

Forty three years ago…my day is approaching. Unconscious reflection consistently appears this time of year. I remember some horrible horrible birthdays. Sad, cautious, mean birthdays. In my adulthood. The best b-days were the ones in Wheeling. Mom combined brother's with mine cause his is November, and we themed it Halloween. All the kids wearing costumes and bobbing for apples in our basement and a long picnic table inside with party hats, cake and balloons. A world ago. Another lifetime…my first lifetime.

My lifetime before the move and divorce a couple years later. Before I was forced to stand under dad’s umbrella of confusion and guilt. When Mom asked us who we wanted to live with and she gave us to Dad anyway.

…Before we visited Mom at her little condo apartment down the road and had sleep overs with the strange furniture and strange expectations. Before Mom moved in with that guy with a long ponytail, at his house. Where did he come from? And where’s Morton Grove? Too far apparently to see Mom often. Good thing I was almost outta there…5 hour drive away to the next lifetime.

1976: Step right up folks, see the brand new home built in the sticks, away from everything familiar and everyone I know in my whole life of ten years old. Bigger house, better home? Mom works sporadically, Dad develops his home office. Why is he staying overnight so often at his apartment in Chicago? Doesn’t he work here? Oh the weather and the games and the nightlife…disco lessons and foreign friends. Huh??

Then the long secret, closed-door discussions Mom and Dad would have in the basement office. We’d sit upstairs watching TV and listening for arguing…none heard. Don’t think it’s bad, cause they’re not hurting each other as far as we can tell. No explanation for a year or so. Then mom takes me into her room to fold laundry with her, one quiet evening. Dad’s in the city, bro and sis somewhere else in the house…The laundry folding talk will always be remembered.

The main points: Your Dad and I are divorcing. Who would you like to live with, if you could choose? Well, sorry, Dad said he would take us all to court and fight for custody so I’m letting him have you. I don’t want that court experience to hurt you. He’ll keep you here, same house, same routine, same friends. You can stay home from school tomorrow and Dad’s coming home so we can talk as a family.

My thoughts: Where did this come from? I didn’t even see you argue or hear yelling from the basement. Why would I want to live with Dad, he’s never around, he and I don’t do anything together, and he’s no fun. Are you joking? I need my mother. So dad’s got more money and knows people who can screw you? I get it, dad’s in the mafia or something and he wants our life to suck. See why I don’t want to live with him? Are you joking? When is this happening to me? What do I tell my friends? Nothing’s the same. Where’s my Mom gonna be when I need her? When will I wake up from this dream? What is happening????

The new lifetime begins. How many is that now?

And the journaling begins. And so does the lifetime of depression. The lifetime began is replaced with the unknown eggshell walk of teen angst and risky behavior and self disrespect and craving love and wishing for change and fighting the forces of unreasonable expectations. Bye bye childhood lifetime. I’ll remember you fondly and pretend I’m still there with you. You, me, child innocence, growth began, wonderment explored, hopes raised, comfort creepin in…I mourn you all. And never see you again.

Finality hurts, no matter the reason.
Loss is mourned, no matter the subject.
No matter who you are
Who you want to be
Losing lifetime is unfair…
For a child.

Find the cost of Freedom…CSNY sings to me now. The costs are high and I’m not done paying. Mother Earth will swallow you, lay your body down. Wish it was that simple. Not my choice to end God’s lifetime. Must live on until He says I’m done. My lifetimes may be molded though.

in a rut

I'm pissed off and out of steam. don't want to talk about how we talk.  stop trying to explain yourself calmly now when you already told me what you really think of me saturday night.  great date, by the way.  I enjoyed every minute together laughing with our friends and your friends and their friends...until you told me why you weren't.  why the fuck do you let me go on for hours if you think I'm embarrassing you?  why don't you sulk or something so I get the hint and shut up?  I wasn't even drinking, you were the one who encouraged she add rum to my diet coke.  what did you expect, hotter sex?  ding, ding, ding, what did he win instead?  a mean bitch who jokes and barbs at his expense.  whata' catch!

did you bring your compound bow, cuz you may need to go postal on her ass when her mouth starts opening.

twenty years ago I was oblivious.  twenty years later I'm surprised.  did we just wake up from a twenty year dream?  are we still fresh college grads, groping each other in front of joe public and not giving a shit who knows we are, oops, pregnant? Or was I too blind to pick up on the doubts you garnered after your parents warned you about my ulterior motives?  oh yeah, I had motives...I motivated myself to be strong and brave while our first child grew inside of me.  I motivated my way to my parents' homes to tell them I fucked up and was moving on.  I motivated my tears to hide and my dreams to be put on hold.  Motivated to find my way in dimly lit reality.  After all, we had each other and we were in love.  cliches can be useful when telling oneself everything will be OK.

So impressions are important now.  Like every Christmas we stuffed into your childhood home, chasing toddlers away from accidents waiting to happen, sleeping on a soggy mattress in an unheated room, fielding canned beer from the basement for the men, posing for photos with crabby babies and crabbier adults, pretending to like the gifts we opened and pretending to know who we received from, attempting conversation without giving away family secrets, fielding career questions and parenting tips from those who wanted us to know better.  Impressed?  not likely.  Confused?  me too.  Why do you hold me accountable for who I am when you know exactly what I'm made of?

another cliche:  buyer beware.  I know who you are and I adjust.  I live with the good and move around the unpleasant.  I expect no perfection, no platitudes.  I'm over that, under that, been there, done that.  Why do you seem to suffer so at the foundation of our differences, now, twenty years past the I do's and I don't know how?   I sit in our kitchen at 2:46 am, typing while you sleep because I'm gonna burst if I don't get this out.  Purging.  Releasing.  Silently shouting at myself as my head hangs in shame.  My insecurities have flared and the fire grows with each fuck up.  How many is that now?  since 1989...burn, baby, burn.

racing the battery

sitting at a local sports bar, just finished watching the Bears beat the Lions with the referee's help, drinking my 4th Oberon and playing beat the battery with my laptop.  I love Sundays in fall.  Chicago sports make all inconsistencies and frustrations seem doable.  Coach Lovie may not be loved by the best city in my world, but Brian Urlacher sure deserves my pedestal pushing today...can you say sack master?
Sitting by myself, but not alone, in a room filled with Detroit Lions fans, watching bad calls lead to a good start for the blue and orange.  Chicago rocks!  But I am researching a different city today: Seattle.  Jeff (husband) invited me to meet him in this northwest coast domain after his trip to China touches down in the US in a couple weeks.  Brother James lives in Seattle and he told me I could choose whatever I wanted to do or see or be while visiting.  Pikes Place Market.  Seattle Art Museum with Picasso's collection.  Alexander Calder's Eagle outdoor sculpture, to add photos to my chicago Calder flamingo visit.  I like collecting.  Local music and local coffee and local gay bars...yes my brother in law is gay.  All good choices.  All good reasons to live.

Battery lower, must finish beer and get outa' here before laptop explodes....

why do bartenders put an orange slice on the edge of a glass of Oberon?  The beer may look orange but it's not orange flavor.  doesn't stop me from drinking it, btw.

son is angry.  many loud complaints at our innocent dog.  audible and angry and unnecessary.  I try to talk to him...calmly, patiently.  I approach him with care and confidence....and I leave him with steam shooting outa' my ears and breathing expletives as I quickly walk toward the far end of our house.  What will kill this kid?  his anger.  what will cure my son?  peace.  He lives like I used to in my decade of depression.  Did I teach him how to negate?  Did I ignore him so much as a child that I branded his soul with doubt?  He's 18 years old and acts like he's 8.  He's a senior in high school and continues to tell himself that subjects don't matter...core classes are a waste of his time...he'll never use grammar or algebra or economics in his future.  This perspective does not originate with me.  I loved school, could be a career student.  I could also master a foreign language while high.  He is not me.  I am not my son.

battery dead...bye for now.

the more things change, the more they....well, you know.

Here's an older post, from january, a few months ago. My words are rough and my emotion is raw...that's me at my best and my worst. I put this one on the back burner, hidden from readers, saved for future use...apparently my family can't absorb the strength of my soul and when some read of my trouble, I received phone calls and "talks" about my sanity. Didn't y'all know I was crazy? I thought that was a given!
Today I require a revisit and review of this scene. Introspection running rampant in my mind begs for answers to similar questions. I'll fill you in later. Life is calling.

So here's the truth. I wanted to run away last night. I drove two hours, stopped to look for a hotel to sleep overnight, and turned around toward home. I'm glad I changed my mind. All I needed was time to think, and sleep. Which I did when I arrived home at 2:30 am.

No one knew I had escaped. My son called me to tell me he was home at curfew and we exchanged I love you's. My husband was in the basement when I left, and when I returned. They still have no clue. Irrational? A little. Necessary? You betcha'.

It's not my first attempt at escaping my reality by automobile. I can drive the four hours to my extended family in my sleep, been traveling that road for over 20 years. Usually I head in their direction. Usually I am guaranteed a soft place to land with one of my clan. This time I wanted to avoid them at all costs. Really, I needed to avoid confrontation. Confrontation put me in my car and pushed me out of town. No, I needed and wanted a reprieve. A respite. I was looking for peace.

Here I sit, 24 hours after my great escape, wondering where I am. I cannot see the forest from the trees. I'm squinting through leaves, standing on my tip toes, craning my neck to look around twisted branches. Too bad the sun isn't shining, I could use more light. Here I sit, 24 hours later, sorting through the underbrush. Shall I gather sticks and start a fire? I may have to stay here for a while. What will I use for cover if it begins to snow? I'm on my own, so I best begin. Begin again. Again.

Lay me down in the cool grass and let me do my stuff (Fleetwood Mac).

My husband and I have been married for 20 years. Well, officially shy by two months, which in the grand scheme of two decades of matrimony, means nothing. My husband and I confronted our demons last night...again. The unwelcome demons that linger here. I hate these demons. I hate them. Hate them. Hate. These fears that paralyze us. The feelings that haunt us. The misunderstandings and miss-communications that fuel our fire. The past precedents of confrontation eat at us, even after we promise them away for good. They tear at our hearts and reveal our weaknesses to each other. The ugly truth rears its head and we talk and emote and engage and stop listening. My husband and I own a pattern and cycle of dysfunctional cooperation. We are not partners. We know this.

We struggle to get along. To like each other. To expect less and receive more. To be content with each other and comfortable together. For twenty years we try. Our history is colorful and checkered. Checkered with choices of circumstance and change. Checkered with unexpected tragedy and unfinished trials. Checkered by the dissimilar expectations we brought with us. Last night I saw, heard, and felt my husband's pent up frustration and anger. Last night was another reminder of our separate lives desperately trying to fit together. I told him my truth and he told me his.

We have all been here before...(CSNY)

Each day I keep my depression in check and my life takes on meaning which he does not understand. I am misunderstood by my life partner and I feel sad. I feel sad because he tells me that I misunderstand him. I feel hollow inside when I see his eyes tear and his voice crack when he tells me that he doesn't know how much more he can take, or give. I empathize. I do. I feel exactly the same honey.

Still we live on. Forging what must be the shape of a married couple's life. Following the bread crumbs we find and praying we found the ones that lead us somewhere...and not back where we started. Last night we came back around, again. We walked onto the path of destruction and started running toward our familiar. Histrionic emotions exited by mouth and entered our storm. Hurt thundered around our heads. Regret gained velocity and pushed the demons closer. And I ran.

parents are people too

"PROMISE TO MY CHILDREN ....I WILL stalk you, freak out on you, lecture you, drive you crazy, be your nightmare, embarrass you in front of your friends, hunt you down like a bloodhound until the day you understand why I do it. Then I will know you are a responsible adult. All because I LOVE YOU! You will never find someone who loves you & cares about you more than I do!!"    (traveling facebook post)
a parent's job is to parent
a child's job is to push limits
ours, yours, their own
that makes me the heavy
that makes me the bitch
I know
I'm not wearing an 'L' on my forehead

what about that scarlet letter?
do you enjoy the reputation you are creating
from your lack of indiscretion
and false sense of power?
entitled to live here
entitled to eat here
entitled to drive our vehicles,
to change house rules at your leisure...
think again kiddo.

exude dignity and behave respectfully
your parents taught you
your conscious tells you
your peers influence you
remember who you are
who you are

RN again

yep, I got the job I interviewed for last week and wrote about here.  Thankful for your support as well as that of my family, extended family, fb friends, and of course God...who, by the way, always leads me on the path I need to walk.  Duh!

Why I freak out over an interview when I've been describing myself to social workers and psychiatrists and family members for decades, I'll never know.  Just me and my insecurity dueling at the front of the line.  Step right up, see the middle-aged nurse doubting herself again.  Place your bets on the time she takes to SNAP OUT OF IT!

uh, hello, where am I?  I'm employed?  I survived the self-sell?
I earned opportunity!  I will be working! as an RN!   Wait, what?

AND MY JOURNEY CONTINUES~~~

to the middle
toward community
hearts mending
hopes growing
view, frame, focus
begin again
again

peace for our son

Tonight he stormed and thrashed his way through the main floor.  My words biting through his brain like the concert music he just returned from.  A chore undone was repeated and requested.  The soft sounds of my parental voice threw him over his edge immediately.  I could feel his volatility rising, see his body tensing as he vomited disrespect and distrust.  Of his mother.  For his parent.  At this stoic human provider of warmth and comfort and all things Maslow.  Choking on tears and frustrating thoughts of incompetence, I forced myself to stand and look this beast in the eye.  This is not my son, what have you done with him?

For years Jeff and I have protected, guided, taught, allowed, modeled, provided, listened, comforted, praised, encouraged.  Two children born in two years.  Life's lessons learned on the job.  Our God given fallibility attached to our backs like super hero capes.  Nobody's perfect.  We are trying our best.  Learn from our mistakes and pray for forgiveness.  No manual, no instructions, no assembly diagram.  We received our kick in the ass and landed face first in family first.
Our intentions were always positive, however negatively we rated our performance.  We should of, could of, would of.  We have to, must do, plan to.  Our children became our purpose.  From this day forward, or forever hold your piece.  Today they are almost adults.  And soon we'll wave proudly as they march in their determined direction.  We poured their foundations and watch as they build up their future frame.  We have amassed hammers and nails and power tools to lend.  Our work gloves are nearby in case they request our input.  Rehearsed nods of approval are ready.  Wait!  The wind has picked up and that delicate two by four has collapsed.  One support stud is missing and has left a gaping hole for cold rain to fall through.  Step back before it falls on you.  This mess needs fixin...Super Parents to the rescue!

We have the professionals in place.  This is not our first trip to this rodeo.  We have our confidence in tact.  Took a couple decades to arouse.  Husband and wife are on the same page, the page we've been reading for 18 years.  Our hearts are locked and loaded, our words shelved methodically by circumstance.  The song remains the same: point him toward success.  We have taught ourselves the ins and outs of our son.  We know what ticks him off and turns him on.  We recognize his faces, smirks, gestures, tones of voice.  We can feel his mood before both of his feet cross the threshold.  We realize his fears and we have expressed our understanding of his anxieties.  Life is one scary four letter word, yes it is.  We are here to coach you to the first down.  We have the resources, the materials, the safety net.  Please let us.  We may be your last lifeline before the real world rears its ugly face.  We will not give up.  You are stuck with us and we pray for your heart to find peace.

God, please allow our son the strength and confidence in his abilities so that he can begin his life walk.  Lord, please bless the community with empathy, compassion, and patience as we journey with our son.  Thank you for providing our family with another day together.  We promise to care for one another as Jesus taught us.  Amen.

searching...

sun has appeared
finally
I was feeling kinda' blue
really a grey shade

hostile comments left floating in the room
unhappy child left the room
better to clear everyone's mind

he acts sad and feigns control
what is a parent to do for you?
say the word and we jump higher
leave your fear at our door
only compassionate empathy lives here
in our hearts
in our concerned glances
after tantrums and telling-off

getting more difficult to see the bright light inside you
we miss your light
your sweet smile and sweet sound
 your laughter

relaxation rote
reap the benefits of our experience please
only you can choose
and we wish you would
sooner than later
later we can't catch you in our double strength net

don't you want to learn the ropes
of life
of the road
of the street smarts you desire?
you have the freedom to refuse and rebut
we accept your independence
your fresh perspective

sense not sensation
logic and love and more logic
 our job from God
your job from God
just do it...or die trying

as she talks herself into being OK

I feel the lump in my throat, the nervous breathing...am I breathing?  I have an interview tomorrow morning.  In ten hours exactly.  I want to like this opportunity.  I want this opportunity to like me.  As a person.  Not as the bestest nurse in the industry.  Tired of competing with my idealistic-ness and the other uninterested so-called RN's in this community.  My experiences have been a varietal group of street smarts (dad always said I needed them) and unfortunate incidents.  All valuable.  All memorable, although I usually don't want any reminders.

Jeff usually clears my direction and gives me the straight and narrow path to sleep on...when I'm doubtful.  On my own tonight cuz my logical husband lives on planes trains and automobiles today.  He's heading home, from Asia...China.  Been there for two weeks.  His quarterly trip of business and humidity and office bonding by team sport (soccer this time).  This trip I missed him lots.  This trip I had to give up our son to the compassionate surgeon we hired to repair him.  This trip I brought said son and older daughter to IL to saturate their grandparents and aunties and uncles and little cousin kids with almost-adult-aged Michigander love.  A first b-day and the day for fathers.  Good gatherings, calm couch chillin', and lots of football aka soccer.  USA!

So I'm feeling better, only a couple paragraphs down.  See what writing on this plastic board of keys does for my nerves?  Despite the plethera of comedic shows recovering son is surfing to the right of me...John Stewart making fun of my president and my favorite world cup sport...a cartoon with a talking dog and swearing baby and idiotic family guy.  Laughter is laughter is laughter.

Tomorrow morning I dress to impress, drive 40 miles south, hand a stranger my neatly typed life, and breathe.  Answer questions, ask questions.  Cheerfully chat and delightfully discuss.  Hearty handshake, nothing else allowed.  Listen.  Observe.  Remember.  Breathe.  This is not the only fish in the sea.  I am marketable.  I am marketable.  Keep chanting.  Keep praying.  Keep believing in your breath.

So if the suit still fits, I must acquit.  Tonight's trial is adjourned.  You are allowed to sleep in peace and awake with no worries....now where's that suit hanging?
